Bike rides are a great way to spend time outside and enjoy the many sights Winnipeg has to offer.
They’re also great for the environment. Here are a few things you should know for your next bike trip.
Designated bike routes
Our seasonal bike routes opened at the beginning of May. They’re designed to provide riders with a more comfortable cycling experience. They feature reduced vehicle speeds and traffic calming aimed to reduce the number of cars on the road.
We also have a number of neighbourhood greenways. These 30 km/h routes are in effect year-round. They are on-street routes designated to comfortably and safely move both cyclists and pedestrians and motor vehicles.
Greenways typically include a range of treatments from low-impact things like signage, bike signals, and pavement markings to varying degrees of traffic calming including a best-practice speed limit of 30 km/h.

It outlines the different types of bike lanes, on-street routes, and multi-use paths throughout the city.
As a reminder, street conditions may vary depending on the time of day, day of the week, and the season. Be prepared to make your own evaluation of traffic and road conditions. Consider routes appropriate to your riding skills.
Bike safe
We want everyone to get to where they are going safely. Cyclists should consider wearing bright, reflective clothing and a helmet. Rear reflectors and bike lights can also draw attention to you while on the road.
Use bike hand signals and make eye contact with drivers. Avoid using distractions such as headphones and electronic devices.
Drivers should also be aware and on the lookout for bikes. Merge behind instead of in front of cyclists, leave at least one meter of space when passing, and check your blind spots.
