Environment Canada has issued an Air Quality Warning for the City of Winnipeg. Smoke from wildfires is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.
Everyone should be aware of potential health effects that can be associated with poor air quality conditions. There are several steps you can take to protect yourself when there is smoke in the air, including:
- Routinely check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI)
- Adjust strenuous activities outdoors, especially if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation
- If breathing becomes difficult or uncomfortable, stop or adjust the activities (consider intensity, frequency, duration, etc.)
- If needed, take breaks in places that have less smoke
- Drink water to help your body cope with the smoke
- If working indoors, keep doors and windows closed if possible
- If you are someone who is at a high risk of impact from exposure to smoke, or if you have difficulty breathing, please inform your direct supervisor
- Contact your healthcare provider if you develop severe symptoms or need advice and call 911 in the event of an emergency
