City promoting food source sustainability with compost giveaway

The City of Winnipeg is giving away free compost from October 1 – 3 to promote food source sustainability. Residents can take up to 100 litres of compost per vehicle to use on their lawns, gardens, and plants, while quantities last.

The compost is comprised of leaf and yard waste collected curbside, as well as food waste collected through the City’s Residential Food Waste Collection Pilot Project. This compost meets Category A standards under the Canadian Council of Ministers of The Environment Guidelines for Compost Quality, which is safe to use in all household applications, including vegetable gardens.

Date: October 1 – 3, 2021
Locations:
– Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot, 1777 Brady Rd
– Kilcona Dog Park, west parking lot off McIvor Ave (line up on Norris Rd, south of McIvor Ave)
– Summit Rd closed landfill site, Summit Rd north of Optimist Park
Time: 9 am – 5 pm daily, while quantities last

Note: this event is open to Winnipeg residents only. Residents must bring their own containers, shovels, and gloves. Shovels will not be provided and City employees are not available to assist in collecting compost. Limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle (approximately five 19-litre/5-gallon pails). To promote social distancing, one vehicle will be allowed at the compost pile at a time.
