Winnipeg Public Library eliminates fines

The Winnipeg Public Library has now joined many Canadian public libraries that eliminated overdue fines in 2020. This recent trend is an effort for libraries to become more equitable for all, as overdue fines may have previously prevented some residents from using the library to access essential information and resources.

As of Janauary 1st, fines and borrowing fees no longer apply to books, magazines, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs. Now everyone can access and enjoy library material and services without worrying about financial penalties if items are returned a few days late

Items will still have due dates, and patrons are still responsible for returning everything they borrow. Replacement charges will still be applied for lost or damaged items.
