Victoria Community Centre NOT closing down.

September, 2010

Concerns have arisen in the neighbourhood regarding the temporary re-locating of programming and the future of the Victoria Community Centre.   The Victoria Community Centre’s programs have temporarily been relocated but the centre will not be closing.   There is one washroom that is closed due to repairs which are expected to be completed shortly.   I have confirmed with the City’s administration that the building is safe to be used for ongoing operations.   The Ft. Garry Community Centre Board, not the City, is in charge of managing the site including programming.     The Board has past a motion to re-locate programming due to safety concerns.   While the centre is old and programming space is limited, I have requested that the Board re-locate programming back to the site.  This request was denied.   I have met with affected community groups and have been working with and will continue to work with the Community Centre Board to address any specific issues preventing the re-locating of the programming to the site.   I believe that local communities need to have accessible community centres.  This community centre will not be closed.
