I’m proud to share that two new recreational opportunities in our ward have taken another leap forward this month – a feasibility study for new arenas and a $600,000 grant to upgrade the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex have been approved by Winnipeg City Council.
New Arenas Feasibility Study
With our community’s love of sports, especially winter activities, the need for additional ice rinks is clear. I am always exploring options to create more opportunities for our area of the city, which includes the previous feasibility study for a city-owned twin area in River Heights-Fort Garry, which is under consideration.
Most recently, I was excited to partner with Treaty 1 and Councillor Sherri Rollins to put forward a proposal to explore the best way to add multiple sheets of indoor ice and other sports facilities on Naawi- Oodena lands, located at Taylor Avenue and Kenaston Boulevard.
Last week, City Council approved us to move forward with the plan last week.
As this initiative kicks off, stay tuned for the chance to provide input on what matters to you as part of the consultation phase of the study.
Upgrade to the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex
Fresh off the World Cup final this weekend, soccer has never been more popular in Winnipeg and that means we have a responsibility to provide high-quality facilities for players, coaches and fans.
This is why $600,000 will be invested in major upgrades to the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex to benefit all those that love playing soccer while also supporting arrival of the new Winnipeg-based professional women’s soccer team in the Northern Super League.
I’m incredibly proud of the successful community centre network in our ward and the way they provide exceptional sport and recreation opportunities to people of all ages.
These two new investments are built on partnerships and create even more chances for you and your family to stay active and connected through sport.
From hockey to ringette to soccer, I’m looking forward to more sports opportunities in River Heights-Fort Garry for years to come.
