Don’t be surprise if we knock on your door this summer. It’s the start of our meter reading season.
We’ll be coming by your home this summer to take a water meter reading. Starting Monday, May 4, our employees will be visiting homes weekdays between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. They will only knock at your front or side door. Please secure your dog(s) in another room or a kennel,
It is important to make sure your water meter is easily accessible.
Our meter readers will be:
- wearing a uniform with a City of Winnipeg logo
- carrying a hand-held device
- presenting you with their photo ID before entering your home
Don’t forget to ask to see our meter reader’s ID before allowing them into your home.
Not home when we come by?
We’ll leave a meter reading card with instructions on how to provide an accurate meter reading by phone or online.
If you prefer that we do not enter your home, you may take your own meter reading while our meter reader waits outside. Simply take a clear photo of your water meter and show it to the meter reader.
If you don’t have a mobile device or camera, you can write your meter reading on the provided card and hand it to the meter reader.
Catch leaks early and avoid higher bills
“It’s important to submit regular water meter readings. This helps us bill more accurately,” said Gilbert Fillion, Superintendent of Meters with the Water & Waste Department.
Regular meter readings alert you to hidden plumbing leaks and ensure you only pay for the water you’ve used.
If you don’t submit regular water meter readings, plumbing leaks in your home can go undetected. Even a small undetected plumbing leak can add hundreds of dollars or more to your utility bill.
You are required to submit one accurate meter reading per year, but we really encourage you to submit them every time you receive a meter reading card. This will help you avoid estimated bills and ensure that you only pay for what you use.
The summer water meter reading program wraps up on August 28.
