You may have pulled out your parkas, but are your pets winter-ready, too?

Pets can lose heat fast, particularly those with short fur, and our weather can change quickly.

Learn how to keep your pets safe this season with these tips.

Know your responsibilities

As a pet owner, you have several responsibilities under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law. This includes protecting them from the cold.

Dogs should never be chained or housed outside for extended periods of time. You must also supervise them when they’re outside. Neither cats nor dogs should be allowed to roam loose in your neighbourhood, regardless of the weather.

It’s also important to never leave your pet in an unattended vehicle in -10 °C weather or colder, unless your vehicle is running with a working heating system.

Outdoor activities

During extreme cold weather, protect your dog by taking them on shorter walks instead of long ones. You may also consider getting a jacket and/or boots for your pet to help protect them and keep them warm.

Some chemicals used to melt the snow on sidewalks can irritate the paws of your pet. Remember to wipe their paws and bellies after walks.
