Q&A
Q: When does the Residential Parking Ban start?
A. The Residential Parking Ban will be in effect Sunday at 7 a.m. to Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Q: I live on a residential street. What does this ban mean for me?
- In advance of the ban starting, you should confirm your snow zone and the 12-hour period when there will be no parking on your street. During this time plan to park elsewhere, like a driveway, nearby street without restrictions, or parking lot. This will help the plowing operation run smoothly and will prevent you from being ticketed.
Q: Where can I find out whether the ban is in place on a certain street?
A: You can search an address online or download the Know Your Zone app, to receive push notifications.
Q: Will my residential street always have the same snow zone letter?
A: Zone letters may change from year-to-year to help us better distribute clearing contracts and more efficiently schedule shifts. You should confirm your snow zone letter at the start of every winter.
Q: Why is the City using Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to enforce winter parking bans?
A. Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology is being used to identify vehicles parked in violation of Residential Parking Bans. The technology allows us to enforce violations across a larger area in a shorter amount of time. We can only effectively clear snow when parked cars aren’t in our way, so our hope is that by increasing enforcement we decrease the number of people who park illegally and therefore improve our service delivery. With ALPR, tickets will be mailed rather than placed on the vehicle’s dash.
Q. What are the benefits of using Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology?
A. The benefits of ALPR are twofold.
First, ALPR technology helps improve the safety of enforcement officers, bystanders, and drivers by reducing the potential for both confrontations and collisions. It also assists with traffic flow during peak hours, as officers don’t always need to stop their vehicles in a lane of traffic to issue a penalty notice.
Second, the technology allows us to enforce violations across a larger area in a shorter amount of time. We can only effectively clear snow when parked cars aren’t in our way, so our hope is that by increasing enforcement we decrease the number of people who park illegally and therefore improve our service delivery.
Enforcement officers will continue to hand-deliver penalty notices to vehicles when necessary.
Q: How much is the ticket for parking in violation of a winter parking ban?
A: Vehicles parked in violation of the residential parking ban may receive a $200 ticket ($150 if paid early).
Q: I don’t agree with a ticket I received. How do I challenge it?
A: If you would like to have your parking ticket reviewed, you can request to have it reviewed by a screening officer free of charge, either online or in person at 495 Portage Ave. You can also proceed to a second level of review by a provincially-appointed adjudicator – there is a $25 charge for adjudication.
