Environment Canada has issued a Blizzard Warning for Winnipeg. Blowing snow and icy conditions will begin this afternoon and continue into tomorrow.
Taking personal precautions and having a basic awareness can help avoid safety incidents:
- When working in the cold, remember to plan for the conditions, wear appropriate winter clothing, take time to warm up as needed and review the Safe Work Procedure: Working in Cold Environments.
- When shoveling, remember that heavy wet snow can be extra strenuous to shovel; make sure you stretch first, use proper equipment and technique to avoid injury, and review the Safe Shoveling Safety Talk.
- When walking outdoors, remember to wear appropriate footwear, avoid distractions (e.g. talking or texting on a cell phone), focus on your balance, use handrails when available, and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
- When driving, remember to drive to the conditions of the road and adhere to travel advisories; clear snow/ice from your vehicle and give yourself extra time, reduce speed, increase following distance, and allow extra time for braking. Manitoba Public Insurance has shared additional information about winter driving.
Working together we can avoid safety incidents this winter!
