Food waste drop off stations coming to Winnipeg on October 15

New partnership provides food waste drop off stations until the Green Cart program launches

The City of Winnipeg and Compost Winnipeg are partnering to launch 15 food waste drop off stations across the city on October 15, 2024. The food waste drop off stations will help residents keep their food waste out of the landfill and help reduce the impacts of climate change.

“For every tonne of food waste diverted, we remove two tonnes of CO 2 emissions,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “That’s why this initiative is so important. By partnering with Compost Winnipeg, we’re giving residents a convenient and immediate way to make a real difference while we gear up for the launch of the green cart program.”

Residents can collect food scraps and other accepted materials in any container. The container can be lined with newspaper, a paper bag, or a Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI)-certified compostable bag to keep it tidy. Food waste can be stored in a fridge or freezer until you are ready to take it to your local food waste drop off station. At the station, toss your bag or empty your container into the designated carts.

“Food waste diversion is such an easy way for us lessen our impact on the landfill,” said City Councillor Evan Duncan, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Water, Waste and the Environment. “If you’re not already composting, try something different. Take advantage of these new food waste drop off stations and help continue our efforts in reducing the impacts of climate change.”

The 15 drop off stations are located across the city, including a drop off stations at all three 4R Winnipeg Depots. Compost Winnipeg will manage the drop off sites and transport the food waste to the compost facility.

“We are excited to partner with the City to help Winnipeggers keep food waste out of the landfill,” said Amanda Wolfe, General Manager of Compost Winnipeg. “We know having a station close to home is key, so we will look for opportunities to add more drop off stations to make it easier for everyone to use.”

The drop off stations will run until the curbside food waste collection program begins, which is anticipated to launch in 2030.
