Southwest Winnipeg residence asked to use “Cottage Rules”
for water usage while major sewer line repair taking place.
City of Winnipeg crews and contractors are hard at work building a sewer pipe bypass to resolve a sewage spill into the Red River at the Fort Garry Bridge caused by broken pipes.
The bypass system directs sewage across the river to the treatment plant, but it’s not fully up and running yet. That means it can’t always handle volume moving within the sewer system. When there’s too much, it can spill into the river.
If you live in southwest Winnipeg, follow these tips to reduce your water use until repairs are completed:
- Use cottage rules for flushing (only flush the toilet when necessary)
- Enjoy shorter showers and avoid bathtub use
- Run only full loads of laundry and dishes
- Delay washing cars
- Turn off the water when you shave or brush your teeth
“By taking these steps, it will help reduce the amount of sewage that flows into the river while repairs are ongoing “There is no risk of drinking water contamination due to this sewer issue.
