Along the way\, he acquired a young black bear cub and named her Winnie\, a tribute to his hometown. \n  \nWinnie became his travel companion and a beloved mascot of the Fort Garry Horse regiment. \nAs the war continued\, Harry’s unit was sent to France\, and London Zoo took Winnie in. She became a popular attraction\, including with a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne. \n  \nChristopher Robin loved Winnie so much that he named his teddy bear “Winnie-the-Pooh.” His father\, author A. A. Milne\, was so inspired by his son’s love for the bear that he created the stories of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. \n\n\n\n\nWinnie and Lieut. DESCRIPTION:Put what you don’t need on the curb during our spring and fall event \n  \n\n\nMake sure label items you are giving away as “free” when you put them on the curb and only take items labeled as ‘free’.\n\n\n\nIs your Winnipeg households ready for a reset? If your closets are full\, cupboards are crowded\, and the entryway cluttered\, it might be worth seeing what you can give a second life to. Not only will it help clear your home\, it can also help others and reduce waste. \nOne easy way to do that is to plan your decluttering around Giveaway Weekend. \nHow Giveaway Weekend works\nGiveaway Weekend is when you can leave things you no longer want on the curb. One weekend takes place in May and the other in September. \nIf you plan to take part\,  make sure to label unwanted items as ‘free’. Remember to bring in any items left on the curb by Sunday evening. \nIf you are checking out the curbs for treasures to you\, please only take items labeled ‘free’. \nBy passing along reusable items you no longer need\, your clean-up makes a big impact. If you are looking to declutter\, getting started may be easier than you think. \nStart small and go room by room\nSpring cleaning doesn’t have to happen all at once. Break it down by choosing one room\, or even one drawer\, and build from there. \nAs you go\, sort items into simple categories like keep\, donate\, recycle\, and give away. If something is still usable\, consider setting it aside for Giveaway Weekend\, so it can find a new home. \nUse Recyclepedia when you’re not sure what goes where\nNot sure whether an item should be recycled\, or thrown away? Download the Recyclepedia app or check online to find out. \nOne thing that should never go in the garbage or recycling bins are lithium batteries. They can cause fires that are especially dangerous because they can last a long time and are hard to put out. The safest way to get rid of items with lithium ion batteries is to take them to a 4R Winnipeg Depot. \nDon’t forget the appliances and hazardous products\nIf you have old electronics and unused appliances piling up\, we’ll take them at our 4R Depots. \nYou can also safely dispose of other household hazardous waste there at no charge. The 4R Depots accept items like cleaners\, pest and weed killers\, paint\, used oil\, and gasoline. Batteries\, except those for EVs\, are also accepted. \nYou can even bring gently used clothing to donate in the textile donation bins on site. \nDonate thoughtfully\nTidying up isn’t just about making space in your home.  If you have items left over after Giveaway Weekend\, consider donating them and helping the community. \n“This seasonal shift is a perfect time to donate and keep the cycle of giving going strong\,” said Alex Grislis\, an Environmental Planner with us. “Winnipeg has many donation centres ready to give your pre-loved items a second life.” \nWe’ve compiled a list of possible places where you can consider donating your items. \nDon’t leave the items by the door\nBook a specific day to finish the job\, like a Saturday morning donation drop-off or a 4R Depot run. A set date turns spring cleaning from mostly done into done. \nJust make sure to check the full list of accepted items at 4R Depots before you go.

DESCRIPTION:Over 10\,000 lights to shine at Brookside Cemetery’s Candlelight Service\nPlease join us September 10 at 7 p.m. to pay tribute to the brave people who served our country\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs night falls over Brookside Cemetery on September 10\, more than 10\,000 lights will shine. This spectacle will pay quiet tribute to the brave men and women who served our country. \n  \nEvery fall\, Brookside Cemetery hosts a Candlelight Service of Remembrance at sunset. Flameless tea lights flicker at each of the over 10\,000 graves in the Field of Honour. It’s the final resting place for Veterans\, Service Members\, and War Heroes. \n“The service pays tribute to the sacrifices of those who served\,” said Brett Shenback\, Cemeteries Administrator. “In addition to the lights in the Field of Honour\, we have taller candles placed on the Stone of Remembrance. This memorial honours all those who died in the world wars.” \nA meaningful event\nSetting up the candles takes several hours. Volunteers from Cadets\, Scouts\, Girl Guides\, and Canada Commonwealth War Graves Commission join community members and cemetery staff to light the candles at the graves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“There is something deeply moving\, beyond words\, about the Field of Honour. Crosses as far as the eye can see\, each marking a life of service\, sacrifice and devotion to our country\,” said Cohen Rutledge\, Provincial Executive Director\, The Royal Canadian Legion Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command. “As The Royal Canadian Legion celebrates our 100th anniversary\, we are honoured to stand alongside the families and community members who gather at Brookside to ensure that every Veteran laid to rest remain in our memories.” \n  \nThe event will also recognize the 70th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping Forces and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong. \n  \nThe Candlelight Service of Remembrance began in 2012 as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II. It has been an annual tradition ever since. \nYou’re invited to join us\nWe hope you’ll be able to join us for this year’s Candlelight Service of Remembrance.  It’s on September 10 and starts at 7 p.m. at Brookside Cemetery (3001 Notre Dame Ave.) \nParking is limited\, so we encourage you to park at the RRC Polytech Notre Dame Campus in the south zone 1 parking lot. It can be accessed from Notre Dame Avenue. \nThere will be shuttle buses providing frequent service from the parking lot to the Cemetery. We’re giving it away on May 8\, 9 and 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at these locations\, while supplies last: \n  \n\n1901 Brady Rd. (next to Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot)\nKilcona Dog Park\, west parking lot off McIvor Avenue (line up on Norris Road\, south of McIvor Avenue)\nSummit Road closed landfill site\, Summit Road north of Optimist Park\n\n  \nThe compost we are giving away is made from the yard waste picked up from Winnipeg homes during the yard waste collection season. \n  \nThis event is open to Winnipeg residents only. Residents must bring their own containers\, shovels\, and gloves. \n  \nThere is a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle (approximately five 19-litre/five-gallon pails). Trailers can be used only for containers up to the 100‑litre limit.
